The primary xylem tissue is of two types : protoxylem and metaxylem. The protoxylem is formed first and the metaxylem is formed later. The primary xylem is called endarch when the protoxylem lies towards the centre(pith) and metaxylem lies towards the periphery. E.g in stem. When the protoxylem lies towards periphery and metaxylem towards the centre it is called exarch xylem, eg : in roots.
