In certain plants, xylem parenchyma and ray parenchyma develop balloon like protrusions into the adjacent xylem vessels, which is called tyloses. Here the tracheids and vessels of the heart wood get plugged by the ingrowth of the adjacent parenchyma cells into their cavities through the pits or tyloses. Ultimately the parenchyma cells become lignified and dead.
