Chemoautotrophic bacteria are without photosynthetic pigments. For the synthesis of their own organic food, they obtain carbon from carbon dioxide of the atmosphere and necessary energy from oxidation of inorganic or organic compounds, such as hydrogen sulphide, ferrous compounds, molecular hydrogen, ammonia and nitrites.
