Acrosome is the inverted cap like structure which is present on the sperm head. It is derived from the Golgi apparatus. Acrosome contains digestive enzymes like hyaluronidase. When the sperm comes in contact with the zonapellucida of the ovum, the acrosome releases these enzymes. They help in digestion of the zonapellucida and enable the sperm to penetrate the ovum. This is known as acrosomal reaction.
Mitochondria are present in the middle piece of the sperm. They provide the energy required by the sperm for fertilizing the ovum.
