DC voltmeter cannot measure the AC voltage.
When we used in ac circuit then these instruments does not record the reading because average value of alternating voltage over a full cycle is zero.
So, these instrument record zero reading.
AC voltage across the resistance can be measured by using ac voltmeter.
AC voltmeter is known as a hot wire voltmeter.
