Synapsis occurs in the zygotene stage of prophase-I of meiosis-I. The homologous chromosome comes close to each other and forms a pair. This pairing is called synapsis and the pair of the homologous chromosomes is called bivalent. During synapsis, a molecular scaffold called synaptonemal complex aligns the DNA molecule of two homologous chromosomes side by side.
