Sulphonation of phenol, gives a mixture of ortho and para isomers. If sulphonation is carried out at low temperature, kinetically controlled ortho-isomer is the chief product and if sulphonation is carried out at high temperature, thermodynamically controlled para-isomer is the chief product.
