The prostate gland is a single large gland that surrounds the urethra. It produces a milky secretion which forms a considerable part of semen. This secretion contains citric acid, lipids and enzymes (acid phosphatase, amylase, protease) and prostaglandins as well as significant numbers of biocarbonate ions, which give the semen its alkaline pH.
