Solution:

Chemiosmotic hypothesis was proposed by Peter Mitchell. According to the hypothesis which occurs in the mitochondria, ATP formation is a result of proton motive force that is generated due to the redox reactions taking place in the electron transport chain. Protons are pumped in the intermembrane space as electrons are passed through the electron transport chain in the cristae of mitochondria. Proton gradient is created across the matrix and intermembrane space. Protons are pumped through the complex resulting in formation of ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate.
