Earthworms have well developed sense organs or receptor organs, which are quite simple in structure consisting of single cell or a group of specialised ectodermal cells. It has three types of receptors: epidermal receptors, buccal receptors and photoreceptors. Epidermal receptors are tactile in function. Buccal receptors are chemoreceptors,confined to the epithelium of buccal chamber and they are gustatory and olfactory (relating to taste and smell). Photoreceptors are restricted only to dorsal surface and are more numerous on prostomium and peristomium
