The menstrual cycle consists of four phases menstrual phase, proliferative phase, ovulatory phase and secretory phase. In a 28 day menstrual cycle, the menses takes place on cycle days 1-5. Follicular phase (proliferative phase) usually includes cycle days 6−13 or 14 in a 28 day cycle. In ovulatory phase both LH and FSH attain a peak level in the middle of cycle (about 14th day). Luteal phase (secretory phase) usually includes cycle days 15 to 28 in a 28 day cycle. So, the shortest phase is the ovulatory phase.
