The term pure line was first introduced by W.L. Johannsen of Denmark in 1903. A pure line may be defined as the “progeny of a single individual obtained by selfing” (Sinnot et. al.) or a group of plants obtained from a single self fertilised homozygous plant. Pure line is true breeding genotype, a line that has been rendered homozygous for all genes under consideration in successive generations. It is a line in which homozygous individuals produce only homozygous offspring like parents. Thus, pure line breed refers to homozygosity only. This method is mostly applicable to self pollinated crops.
