Ovaries are the primary female sex organs which produce ovum (the female gamete) and several steroid ovarian hormones. The size of an ovary varies from 2-4 cm in length. Each ovary is situated on each side of the lower abdomen and is connected to the pelvic wall and uterus by ligaments. It is covered by a thin epithelium which encloses the ovarian stroma, which is divided into two zones - the peripheral cortex and inner medulla.
