Solution:

Selaginella is a heterosporous pteridophyte that nearly approaches seed habit. Heterospory (Production of spores of two different sizes and two different developmental pattersns ie, microspones and megaspores) is considered to be a prerequisite to seed formation. Besides it, Selaginella also shows retention of megaspore in the megasporagium till the development of young sporophyte which is an important step towards seed formation.
