The anterior end of pharynx in earthworm is marked by a nerve ring placed in a transverse groove between it and buccal chamber. Its cavity is somewhat dorsoventrally compressed due to presence of a large glandular mass on its roof producing a salivary secretion. It contains mucous and proteolytic* enzymes which are poured into the salivary chamber. Alimentary canal of Pheretima is complete and functionally regionated into various parts which are buccal chamber, pharynx,. oesophagus, gizzard, stomach and intestine. The lining epithelium of buccal chamber is; thrown into longitudinal folds.
