Solution:

The number of groups of neurons are located in the medulla oblongata which controls the respiratory rhythm. These regions are called as respiratory centres. There are three groups of respiratory centres named as dorsal respiratory group, ventral respiratory group and pneumotaxic centre. The pneumotaxic centre is dorsally located in the upper pons and controls the switch off point of inspiration. The strong signal causes increased rate of breathing because inspiration and expiration both gets shortened. The concentration of hydrogen ions, carbon dioxide cause increased strength of inspiratory and expiratory signal. However, oxygen has no direct effect on these signals.
