Q.
Read the following five statements (A to E) and select the option with all correct statements
(A) Mosses and Lichens are the first organisms to colonize a bare rock.
(B) Selaginella is a homosporous pteridophyte.
(C) Coralloid roots in Cycas have VAM
(D) Main plant body in bryophytes is gametophytic, whereas in pteridophytes it is sporophytic.
(E) In gymnosperms, male and female gametophytes are present within sporangia located on sporophyte.
Solution:
Mosses are an important link in the succession of plants to the rocky area. They participate in the construction of soil in lichen-formed rock crevices. They're the first organism to colonise rocks along with lichen. They do this by the secretion of acid content by decomposing rock.
The bryophyte 's adult plant body reflects the gametophyte. As a parasite on the gametophyte, a short-lived sporophyte exists. A leafy green sporophyte produces cones containing male and female gametophytes in gymnosperms; female cones are larger and positioned higher up in the tree than male cones.
The male and female gametophytes do not have an independent free living life in gymnosperm (Cedrus). They remain within the sporangia retained on the sporophytes, i.e. female and male gametophyte within megasporangium and microsporangium respectively.
Coralloid roots in Cycas contain cyanobacteria which fixes nitrogen.
Selaginella is a heterosporous pteridophyte.
Pteridophytes are the first true land-plants that evolved few characteristic milestones:
1. Vascular tissue.
2. Heterospory.
3. Sporophytic generation dominant.
