Mitosis is an equational division in which one cell divides to form two identical daughter cells. Meiosis produces genetic variation due to crossing over which occurs during prophase I of meiosis. During anaphase centromere splits and two chromatids are separated and starts moving to opposite poles. During anaphase I, the homologous chromosome moves to opposite poles, hence reduction in the number of chromosome happens.
