Oxyntic cells (= parietal cells) are large and are most numerous on the side walls of the gastric glands. They secrete hydrochloric acid and Castle’s intrinsic factor. Hydrochloric acid serves many functions like it kills harmful bacteria; it provides acidic medium in the stomach for gastric digestion; it changes pepsinogen into pepsin and prorennin into rennin; softens the food and make it readily available for enzyme action; it stops the action of salivary enzyme.
