Okazaki fragments are formed during semidiscontinuous process of replication of DNA. At the point of replication, replication fork is formed. The replication of DNA is continuous on one strand (5-3 direction) called the leading strand. On the second strand replication is discontinuous. This is called lagging strand on which okazaki fragments are formed. Okazaki fragments are joined to each other by ligase.
