Lead is the most hazardous metal pollutant of automobile exhaust, anti-knock motor fuel contain lead. Approximately 5×10−4 micro gram /m3 lead is present in the air of metro cities in India. The pollutant is persistent, cumulative and may show biological amplification. It has mutagenic effects and may cause congenital deformities. Symptoms of lead poisoning are loss of appetite, appearance of bluish lines round the gums, anaemia, etc.
