MTP stands for the Medical Termination of Pregnancy. It is the voluntary or intentional termination of pregnancy before its full term. On an average basis, 45 to 50 million MTPs are performed annually all over the world which is about 1/5th of the total number of pregnancies conceived in a year. In 1971, the Government of India legalised MTP but with certain strict conditions to avoid its misuse like to check indiscriminate and illegal female foeticides. MTPs are performed either to get rid of unwanted pregnancies in case of rapes or in conditions where continuation of the pregnancy could be fatal either to the foetus or to the mother or both. Up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, i.e., the first-trimester, MTPs are considered relatively safe. Whereas MTPs performed in the second trimester are much riskier and can be fatal.
