Q.
Match column with column and select the correct option from codes given below.
column A Cleistogamy (i) Insect pollination B Geitonogamy (ii) Bud pollination C Entomophily (iii) Pollination between flowers in the same plant D Xenogamy (iv) Wind pollination (v) Cross pollination
A | Cleistogamy | (i) | Insect pollination |
B | Geitonogamy | (ii) | Bud pollination |
C | Entomophily | (iii) | Pollination between flowers in the same plant |
D | Xenogamy | (iv) | Wind pollination |
(v) | Cross pollination |
Solution:
Pollination is the process of transfer of pollen of one flower to the same or different flowers of the same species. Depending on the nature, there are the following types of pollination:
- Autogamy is a condition of transfer of pollen of one flower to the stigma of the same flower. Generally, cleistogamous flowers, like in Commelina, which never open, the pollination is called bud pollination and is always autogamous type.
- Geitonogamy is a condition of transfer of pollen of one flower to the stigma of the other flower on the same plant. This is physically a cross-pollination type, as it needs some agents, but physiologically autogamy.
- Allogamy is the cross-pollination or transfer of pollen from one flower of one plant to the other flower of some other plant of the same species. This causes hybrid vigour and brings out new combinations. If the species are same, it is called xenogamy.
Cross pollination needs various agents:
- grasses are pollinated by wind (anemophily, abiotic agent), while Vallisneria is pollinated by water (hydrophily, abiotic agent).
- Pollination by birds are called ornithophily. Pollination by insects are called entomophily. Pollination by bats are called chiropterophily.
