Mammary glands of mammals are modified sweat glands which are apocrine in nature. Except in prototherians, the deeply situated, main secretory part of each sweat gland comprises many small masses, known as lobules. Abundant fatty tissues (adipose) usually surrounds the alveoli and ducts. So that a considerable adjacent part of the skin is raised into the form of a breast or mammae.
