Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is obtained from Claviceps purpurea which belongs to the subdivision ascomycotina. Claviceps, which is commonly called as ergot fungus is parasitic on rye, barley, wheat and other grasses and cause disease ergot in these plants by infecting their floral parts. The common ergot disease of rye (Secale cereale) is caused by Claviceps purpurea. Ergot contains lysergic acid which is one of the natural source of LSD.
