Lichens are the symbiotic association (i.e., mutually useful association) of algae and fungi.
The algal component of this association is called phycobiont (autotrophic) and fungal component is called mycobiont (heterotrophic). In this association, algae prepare food for fungi and fungi provides shelter and absorb mineral nutrients and water for its partner.Mycobiont is mostly the membero of ascomycetes or sometimes basidiomycetes.Phycobiont are mostly a member of Chlororophyceae and may be a Blue green algae.
The term 'Mycorrhizae' was coined by Frank (1885). It is an association between a fungus and the root of a higher plant e.g. Pine, Birch, Eucalyptus, Ficus etc. The actively growing roots of higher plants get infected by fungi.
