Peristalsis is defined as the waves of involuntary muscular contraction and relaxation that passes along the alimentary canal, forcing food content along. It is brought about by contraction of the circular muscle of the gut wall in sequence. It is always towards anus. The peristalsis is minimum in oesophagus and maximum in duodenum and absent in rectum.
