Carbohydrates are hydrates of carbon. These are classified as Monosaccharides, Oligosaccharides and Polysaccharides depending on number of sugar units. Polysaccharides contain more than nine sugar units. These are further classified as Homosaccharides if all the sugar units are same and Heterosaccharides if more than one type of sugar unit is seen. Examples of Homosaccharides are Cellulose, Starch, Glycogen and Inulin etc. Inulin is the only homopolysaccharide which is made up of many fructose units. This sugar is used to assess kidney function.
