A fixed quantity of any substance is associated with a definite amount of energy which depends upon chemical nature of the substance and its state of existence. Thus energy is called intrinsic or internal energy (u). It includes, translational energy, rotational energy, vibrational energy, electronic energy, nuclear energy, and interaction energy of the molecule. It does not include energy due to gravitational pull.
