A fixed quantity of any substance is associated with a definite amount of energy which depends upon chemical nature of the substance and its state of existence. Thus energy is called intrinsic or internal energy $(u)$. It includes, translational energy, rotational energy, vibrational energy, electronic energy, nuclear energy, and interaction energy of the molecule. It does not include energy due to gravitational pull.
