The fertilized mature ovule containing the embryo surrounded by layer of hard coat is generally called as seed. While the ovary in the flowering plant develops into a fruit after fertilization. The flowering plant family Poaceae show the fruit pattern of caryopsis which is a simple dry fruit similar to an achene but the pericarp (layers of the fruit part) is fused with the seed coat forming a grain. Rice, wheat and corn are classic examples showing such type of fruiting behaviour.
