A sigmoid growth curve shows various stages, phase of slow growth or lag phase, phase of exponential growth or phase, phase of diminishing growth and steady or stationary phase. During lag phase there is very less growth. In log phase, once the metabolic machinery is running they start multiplying exponentially. Then because of decreasing resource, the growth starts diminishing and then the curve levels off when the environment has reached its carrying capacity i.e., when food, space and other conditions can support a given number of individuals without an increase in population number.
