Statutory ban on amniocentesis for sex-determination to legally check the increasing menace of female foeticides, massive child immunization, etc. In amniocentesis, some of the amniotic fluid of the developing foetus is taken to analyze the fetal cells and dissolved substances. This procedure is used to test for the presence of certain genetic disorders such as, down syndrome, hemophilia, sickle-cell anemia, etc., determine the survivability of the foetus.
Sometimes cleft lip or palate can occur separately without other components of a syndrome, especially due to folate deficiency and also increased maternal age. TIFA scan which is usually done around the 20th week of gestation can detect cleft lip and palate with good accuracy.
