Mitochondria are small granular or filamentous bodies, called power house of the cell because it is associated with cellular respiration and energy generation of cell. It has been shown that isolated mitochondria can synthesize DNA (Wintersberger 1966). Besides DNA, a mitochondrion has RNA and its ribosome also. Thus, a complete protein synthesis machinery is present in mitochondria which suggests the semiautonomous nature of mitochondria. The ribosomes of mitochondria are small, ie, 55−60S type which are comparable to 70S than 80S type.
