The process of conversion of glucose units to pyruvic acid though a series of enzyme catalysed reactions without the utilisation of O2 is called glycolysis. It is also known as EMP pathway. In this fructose 1,6 diphosphate is the 6-C sugar that is broken down to glyceraldehyde-3 phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate both of which are 3-C compounds. It involves the catalytic influence of an enzyme, aldolase. This reaction is interconvertible.
