A junction transistor is formed by sandwiching a p-type material between two layers of n-type materials or an n-type materials between two layers of p-type materials. The material between the two same layers is termed as the base of the transistor. Therefore, the base of a transistor is an extrinsic semiconductor (a semiconductor doped with impurities).
