The electron transport system is a chain of carriers consisting of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), flavin nucleotides (FAD, sometimes FMN), coenzyme Q (CoQ) and the cytochromes (cyt b,c,a,a 3 ). Nonheme iron proteins also seem to be involved but their role is not known exactly.
