Solution:
The phenomenon where an unfertilized egg develops into a male and the fertilized egg forms a female is called Haploid-diploid mechanism or Haplodiploidy. In such scenario, female is diploid and male is haploid. Also, the sperm cells are formed by mitosis and female eggs by meiosis. If the egg is not fertilized, it will still develop but into a male (arrhenotoky or arrhenotokous parthenogenesis). It is commonly observed in insects, such as bees, wasps, saw flies and ants.
