Solution:

The chromosomal theory of inheritance was proposed by Mendel. This theory states that there are certain factors which are passed on from one generation to the next in pairs which are present on the homologous chromosomes. The genes are arranged in a linear manner on the chromosomes. The genes are present along the length of the chromosome. The two homologous chromosomes form a pair only during cell division. Different genes are located in a single chromosome in a linear fashion. The position of each gene on the chromosome is known as the locus of that gene. Each chromosome in an organism has different loci for different genes. For example, there are certain genes for eye colour, which are present on chromosome of a human being. The homologous chromosomes each have one of the alleles for the particular gene pair.
