Rice of paddy fields are a big source of atmospheric methane gas. The warm, water logged soil of rice paddies provides ideal conditions for methanogenesis. Though, some of the methane produced is usually oxidized by methanotrophs in the shallow water, the vast majority is released into the atmosphere. When the rice paddy soil dries out sufficiently, the soil can become a temporary sink for atmospheric methane.
