The operon consists of a series of structural genes (SG1,SG2,SG3). A segment of DNA called an operator, controls the functioning of structural genes. Adjacent to the structural genes and next to the operator an additional DNA segment called promoter. Elsewhere on the chromosome there is a segment of DNA called regulator gene and next to this is a DNA is segment that functions as a promoter for regulator gene.
