Q. Free nuclear endosperm is formed due to
Solution:
Once the primary endosperm nucleus is formed, mitotic divisions take place in it which leads to the formation of the endosperm. There are types of endosperm developments that take place for endosperm formation. These are: (i) Nuclear type, (ii) Cellular type, (iii) Helobial type
Nuclear type: In the nuclear type of endosperm formation, the primary endosperm nucleus divides mitotically. These subsequent mitotic divisions are not followed by cell wall formation. The nuclei lie freely inside the cytoplasm of the embryo sac. This type of endosperm formation takes place in coconut (Cocos nucifera).
In coconut the surrounding white kernel formed after cytokinesis called coconut meal and is called as cellular endosperm and the coconut water in the center is free nuclear endosperm made up of thousands of nuclei that do not form cell wall.
