Compounds having either CH3 overset underset||OC- group or CH3CHOH- group, give iodoform when warmed with I2 and NaOH, Thus, CH3 underset overset|HCHOH, CH3 - overset underset||OC - CH3, CH3 - underset overset|CH3C HOH give iodoform when warmed with I2 and NaOH. (Remember, NaOl oxidises CH3CH2OH to CH3CHO, thus it gives positive iodoform test.)
