Q. Follwoing compounds are given :
(a)$CH_3CH_2OH $
(b)$ CH_3COCH_3$
(c)$CH_3- \underset{\overset{|}{C}H_3}{C}HOH$
(d)$CH_3OH $
Which of the above compounds(s), on being warmed with iodine solution and $NaOH$, will give iodoform ?

AIPMTAIPMT 2010Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

Solution:

Compounds having either $CH_3\overset{\underset{||}{O}}{C}-$ group or $CH_3CHOH-$ group, give iodoform when warmed with $I_2$ and $NaOH$, Thus, $CH_3\underset{\overset{|}{H}}{C}HOH, CH_3 - \overset{\underset{||}{O}}{C} - CH_3, CH_3 - \underset{\overset{|}{C}H_3}{C H}OH$ give iodoform when warmed with $I_2$ and $NaOH$. (Remember, $NaOl$ oxidises $CH_3CH_2OH$ to $CH_3CHO$, thus it gives positive iodoform test.)
