Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or venereal diseases (VDs) or reproductive tract infections (RTIs) are the terms collectively used for the infections or diseases which are transmitted through sexual intercourse mode. Gonorrhoea, syphilis, genital herpes, chlamydiasis, genital warts, trichomoniasis, hepatitis-B and HIV leading to AIDS are some of the common STDs. Among these, HIV infection is the most dangerous. Most of the sexually transmitted diseases are completely curable except for hepatitis-B, genital herpes and HIV infections, if detected early and treated properly. Some STDs along with their causative organisms are given below :-
1. Gonorrhoea - Neisseria gonorrhoeae (bacterium).
2. Genital herpes - Herpes simplex virus.
3. Genital warts - Human papilloma virus.
4. Syphilis - Treponema pallidum (bacterium). This disease is characterised by the development of chancre on the genitals.
5. Trichomoniasis - Trichomonas vaginalis (protozoan).
6. Chlamydiasis - Chlamydia trachomatis (bacterium).
