Thomas Hunt Morgan and his colleagues worked on the sex linked genes of fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. They showed that the two genes did not segregate independently of each other and F₂ progeny ratio differed from the expected 9:3:3:1. Morgan concluded that the genes on same chromosome are linked to each other. Tightly linked genes showed very low recombination and vice versa.
