Ethylene is a natural, simple gaseo hydrocarbon produced in small amount by many plants and acting as a plant hormone or growth substance. Its effect on fruit ripening has agricultural importance, and is used to promote ripening of grapes, tomatoes, cherries and blue berries. Ethylene also appears to play roles in sex determination of flowers in monoecious plants.
