: Coral refers to a particular class of animal belonging to phylum coelenterata (class anthozoa). It is a soft-bodied radially symmetrical marine invertebrate which secretes a calcareous skeleton. The reef is formed by cementing together of millions of these calcareous skeletons over a long period of time.
