Plant growth is of two types, primary growth, and secondary growth. In primary growth, the length of the plant part increases due to the primary meristem. This activity achieved by process differentiation. By differentiation, primary permanent tissue is formed primary meristem. In older dicot plants, primary permanent tissue becomes meristematic and produce secondary meristem by the process dedifferentiation. Secondary permanent tissue is formed by secondary meristem through the process of redifferentiation. The redifferentiation process occurs in the stelar region and extra stelar region. In the extrastelar region, cork and secondary cortex are formed by cork cambium, while in the stelar region, secondary xylem and secondary phloem are produced by the vascular cambium.
Continuous activity of vascular cambium results in acccumulation of more secondary xylem than secondary phloem. The primary and secondary phloem gets gradually crushed due to continuous formation and accumulation of secondary xylem. The primary xylem, however, remains more or less intact, in or around the centre
