Q. Consider the following four statements (i-iv) and select the option which includes the correct ones only.
(i) Nissl's granules are masses of ribosomes and rough endoplasmic reticulum.
(ii) Nissl's granules help in protein synthesis.

Solution:

A Nissl body or Nissl granules are large granular body found in the nerve cells. These granules are composed of the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER) that have rosettes of free ribosomes on their surface. They are the site of protein synthesis. It is found in the soma and dendrites of neurons but not in the axon or axon hillock. The ultrastructure of Nissl bodies suggests that they are majorly concerned with the protein synthesis for intracellular use.
